The Nakamoto upgrade—a hard fork designed to boost the performance of the Bitcoin Layer Stacks—is nearing completion.

To celebrate this achievement with the community, Xverse has collaborated with three Latin America-based artists to drop limited edition NFTs.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about the upcoming NFT claim that’ll be taking place on Stacks as soon as the upgrade is complete.

Stacks is Levelling Up: The Nakamoto Upgrade is Complete

The Stacks Nakamoto upgrade is a hard fork of the Stacks designed to optimize speed and security on the Bitcoin L2.

Stacks rolled out the upgrade in two phases:

  • The first phase involved shipping the code and onboarding Signers.
  • The second and final phase, the activation stage, commenced in August 2024 and was completed with block 867867 on October 29th.

By introducing a Bitcoin VM (virtual machine), the upgrade will support developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) and complex smart contracts that are inherently tied to Bitcoin.

As such, the Nakamoto upgrade will further expand the Bitcoin ecosystem by pioneering Bitcoin-based DeFi applications built on Stacks.

Introducing Nakamoto Art: Celebrating the Nakamoto Upgrade

To commemorate the Nakamoto upgrade going live, Xverse will launch a limited edition Hybrid NFT drop on Stacks.

We set out to create something unique that captures Stacks’ speed and low transaction costs while taking advantage of Bitcoin’s immutability and durability. The result? The first-ever Hybrid Layer 1 & 2 NFT—art on Stacks that pulls its core content from Bitcoin itself!

So, what is a Hybrid Layer 1 & 2 NFT?

Here’s how it works: we inscribed a full-resolution image, sized at 867x867 pixels, onto Bitcoin using the Ordinals protocol, then built a contract on Stacks that links directly to this inscription. It’s the best of both worlds: Immutability 🤝 Speed.

Unravelling the Artists Behind the Limited Edition NFT Collection

The three artists behind the Nakamoto Upgrade Limited Edition NFTs are Superama, YuZapata, and Judasca. Let’s look at each of the artists in detail.

Superama

Satoshi is Female - Superama

Superama’s artistic journey has been one filled with vibrant exploration of self-expression and empowerment. Inspired by art’s transformative power, Superama creates art pieces that are both colorful and picturesque.

Superama’s work often delves into themes of inner strength, personal growth, and the ability to positively impact the world around us. She hopes viewers will draw inspiration and uplifting from the limited edition NFT collection on stacks.

Superama says that artwork is a vessel that can help humanity tap into their potential. If you are one of the lucky minters, he hopes you’ll also share the light with others.

YuZapata

Orange Fruit - YuZapata

YuZapata has been an artist ever since he could hold a pencil. This led him to study graphic design before he founded a creative agency, thanks to which he discovered art to be humanity’s true form of expression.

His artistic style of expression aims to evoke the most profound connection, be it on a physical or digital canvas. One of his iconic pieces, Palometa the Pigeon, embodies the true joys of life in the streets of Palometa by helping viewers realize how happiness can be found in the small things.

YuZapata’s artworks have been exhibited in both digital and physical spaces across Bogotá, Barcelona, Mexico, Miami, Pakistan, Tokyo, and Palometa, among others.

Judasaca

SMILES - Judasaca

Juan Salazar, AKA Judasaca, is a hybrid artist who combines traditional and digital art using augmented reality.

According to him, nothing stays the same. This mantra has been his guiding philosophy throughout his art career.

While keen to explore exciting subjects for people who come across his works, he’s also been particularly interested in the intersection of art and technology.

His art pieces depict how he sees the world today against the lens of reality. Moreover, his work has also delved into brandalism, a deep exploration of the identity of brands and how we perceive them.
